Cake board and thin supports

What is a cake board?
Many people often confuse the terms cake drum and cake board.
To simplify, the term "cake board" is a generic term for any type of support on which you place a cake. Board translates to "planche" in French. The cake board is a thin cardboard support to present your cakes.
The cake drum, on the other hand, is a variation of the cake board. It is a thicker base that is often used for particularly heavy cakes.
What is the purpose of a cake board?
It can also be used between each cake of a wedding cake or a wedding cake stand. It stabilizes the cake and its thickness of 2mm allows the dowel rod (support rod for wedding cake) to pierce it and thus create a support pillar.
For most cakes without multiple tiers, standard cake rings will do a great job of providing stability to your cake base. These are usually cardboard cake rings, but you can also easily find foam, MDF or laminated chipboard ones.
If you're looking for a thicker cardboard base to nicely display a layer cake, opt for the cake drum.
The different cake boards
It is crucial to have the right size cake board to arrange your cake.
It is important to leave at least 5 cm of space between the cake and the edge of the cake board. Therefore, the cake board you use should be at least 10 cm wider than your cake.
In fact, in addition to providing structural support for the cake, the cake board should also make it easy to carry in its cake box. A cake board that is wider than your cake will be more efficient because it will allow you to pick up your cake without touching it. This will give you a more secure grip and avoid messing up your cake's icing.
However, if you are using cake boards between each tier of a multi-tiered cake (such as a wedding cake), these boards should be the same size as the respective tier of your cake.
