Stencil details can completely enhance a cake design, and the creative possibilities are many.
Stencils in cake decorating are props used to transfer images onto the surface of the cake using icing, royal icing, or even edible paints and sprays. You can find ready-made stencils with images or cut-out designs.
The cake should ideally be a cake that has been in the refrigerator for a short time so that the icing will set for best results. The cake should be refrigerated for at least an hour after the last layer of buttercream. The buttercream or frosting on the cake should be firm or hard to the touch. If the buttercream or frosting is soft, it will stick to the stencil when you apply it to the cake and come off when you remove it from the cake. This can also happen if there is condensation on the cake.
It is recommended to refrigerate the cake after each stencilled area for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. This will prevent the decorated area from getting dirty and damaged. Check to see if the buttercream is hard to the touch and dry. If the buttercream is still soft, put it back in the refrigerator for an hour.
